The Design and Construction of the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel
Brendon McNiven & Dai Yamashita - ARUP
The all new Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, located in Docklands, opened on December 23, 2013. The largest compression wheel of its type in the world, and the only giant observation wheel in the Southern Hemisphere, the new Star was built after initial structural issues led to closure of the original Southern Star in early 2009. Arup led the subsequent design of the new ‘wheel’ structure. Brendon McNiven and Dai Yamashita will describe the engineering behind Melbourne’s new Star as well as sharing some background on other giant observation wheels around the world.
