Transparent Safety Fence in F1 Australian Grand Prix
- Dominic Li, Associate Director – Facades and Building Structures, Hyder Consulting
The Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix has been successfully held in Melbourne for many years. People take safety for granted in events like this.
The transparent safety fence installed in Melbourne Grand Prix is Australia’s, if not world’s first type of plastic safety screen of its kind. This presentation will discuss the safety requirements and R&D process in the design and manufacture of these screens.
Every year, temporary structures such as grandstands and footbridges are erected quickly, used for a short period of time, then dismantled and stored away for the following year. Are these structures safe? The presentation will also give an overview of structural requirements on temporary structures.
Dominic has over 30 years of professional engineering experience in Australian and international projects including numerous high rise, medium and low rise buildings, deep basements and long span structures. He has worked on a broad range of buildings for commercial, residential, industrial, education, police stations, aged care and child care facilities. He is proficient in designing with reinforced, prestressed and precast concrete, steel, steel/concrete composite, masonry and timber structures. He has played a key role in leading multi-discipline design teams in several of his projects.
