“Just do it”
Of the 100 or so members of the Institution of Structural Engineers in Victoria, a few of us were disappointed with the level of activity for working professional structural engineers in Melbourne. So a decade ago, a few of us got together to change the status quo. At an informal meeting of a few members of the IStructE and Past President Mike Fordyce in Melbourne in November 2007, the idea of forming an active group was first floated. Further members meetings were held at GHD’s offices in Lonsdale Street. The growing consensus of the group was that our group should forge its own identity and purpose in the locality where we work and live. During our early discussions, the question was raised ‘what is the most distinctive feature of the IStructE for us individually’. One after another, each participant articulated how the IStructE 7 hour examination had been key for personal professional development. We immediately grasped the importance of helping local structural engineers to join us by helping them to pass this examination.
