  • Conditions of behaviour
  • Points of certainty
  • Cutting back

  • Frames Trusses

Audience

This workshop is intended for those interested in improving their understanding of structural behaviour without calculation. This is a key skill for interpreting complex computer model outputs, a quick method to pick up gross errors, and the first step in the model validation process. It helps the structural engineer answer: "Does the output look right?" A qualitative understanding of structural behaviour forms the basis for artful scheme design of structural solutions. The workshop is therefore most suitable for Graduate Structural Engineers with up to around 3 years’ experience.

Presenter

Dr Colin Caprani, MIStructE, is a Charted Structural Engineer and Senior Lecturer at Monash University. He has been teaching structural behaviour for 18 years. His lecture notes and concepts for teaching structural behaviour have been adopted in many universities across the world. As a Member of Council of the IStructE, he advocates that good structural design requires mastery of structural behaviour and knowledge of the limitations of modern structural engineering software.
