How we build, and the materials we use, has a significant impact on the world’s environment. Globally, a major move is underway embracing new environmentally friendly construction materials, such as wood - beyond its traditional residential construction use. New engineered wood products (EWPs) and wood systems, including Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), are driving this change. One of the key enablers in the broader take-up of these systems in Australia, is the understanding, confidence and design knowledge of the Structural Engineer. This presentation will focus on CLT from the structural engineers perspective: how is it made, what are its material properties, how do you design with it (floors, walls, shear walls, etc), how do you connect it and install it, where can it be used, how do you deal with fire protection, why is it more cost effective to construct with than traditional concrete in mid-rise construction, what are some of the exemplar buildings constructed in CLT, what assistance and resources are available for structural engineers who would like to embrace CLT design. Whilst to date most CLT has been imported into Australia from major overseas manufacturers, from early 2018 local CLT manufacture will be underway from a new high production CLT plant being constructed by XLam in Wodonga. There is a major opportunity for Australian structural engineers to skill-up and specialise in CLT, and other engineered wood-systems, design.  This presentation will give you the knowledge to assess if this is an area for you and your business.

Alastair is a is a structural engineer and Director of TPC Solutions (Aust) Pty Ltd, a consultancy specialising in advice on the use and impact of building and construction materials. Alastair is also the Program Manager in Victoria for WoodSolutions – a wood products industry funded program, focussed on inspiring and delivering information and resources on timber and wood products to professionals involved in building design and construction.  He has extensive experience in the delivery of timber structures, and a particular interest in the design and development of new and innovative construction systems and environmentally sustainable building materials.
